What is polished concrete?

Polished concrete is considered a form of environmentally-conscious flooring. Polished and hardened concrete floors are considered low-maintenance and offer an extremely long life expectancy when compared to other types of flooring. Epoxy floors, for example, are prone to delamination and have a comparably short life span of one to three years, while the typical lifespan for tile floors is ten to 20 years. A properly maintained polished concrete floor on the other hand can be expected to exceed this life expectancy by a substantial margin. Other benefits associated with polished concrete floors include its ease of cleaning and the fact that it does not support mould growth.

Becosan is a non-film-forming polished concrete floor treatment that enhances the strength of the concrete and protects the surface. As opposed to traditional chemical-based treatments, Becosan’s densifiers and sealers use water-based lithium impregnators that penetrate the capillary structure of the floor and chemically bond the particles, resulting in a hardwearing floor that will not delaminate.

The Becosan treatment comprises a 6-step polishing and grinding process that offers a variety of finishes. In addition to specifying a matt-plus, semi-gloss or high-gloss finish, clients can also choose their preferred aggregate exposure.

As every Becosan team can complete up to 1,000sqm a day (client operations dependent), even large-scale installations can be completed quickly and without disrupting the client’s production process.
